Anesthesia in Colombian Hospitals: Training Standards, Equipment, and Safety Monitoring

Updated: September 2026 Read time: ~6 min

Anesthesia safety in Colombia matches US standards. Anesthesiologists train 10–13 years total. Equipment (Drager, Philips anesthesia machines, modern ventilators) is identical to US hospitals. Monitoring during surgery includes ECG, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, capnography, temperature, and optional brain monitoring (BIS). Pre-op consultation discusses medical history, allergies, medications, and anesthesia plan. Complications (malignant hyperthermia, awareness, difficult airway) are extremely rare and managed by trained anesthesiologists with backup equipment. Serious complication risk is ~1 in 100,000 in healthy patients.
